Post Post-Modern Japanese Architectural

In 21st century, there are big change at Post Post-Modern Architecture in Japan. Architects like Fumihiko, Maki, Arata Izozaki, Hara Hirose, Tadao Ando, Edward Suzuki, Kiko Mozuna, Shin Takamatsu, and others race to find new ideas which sometime hidden in one manifestation which difficult to guess where the direction. Those ideas independent from their cultures and history, even the philosophy.

At years ‘70, traditional concept like machinami (street with the lines of home and warehouse) develop as clear materialization of harmonious which in continuous way want to create building in the city that have same pattern and character, and of course this matter become manipulation of ideas above.

Then post-modern came, infiltrate in the city as catalyst, which change machinami concept in an ideology from “environment”. Buildings sometime divided become two characteristic urban cultures which transmitted symbols as traditional culture background. Philosophies symbols like air, sky, water, wind, and fire expressed as dialogue between human and nature. A combination from romantic dreams between technology and spiritual value which try to formed in physical expression.

Like Art Tower Mito, created by Arata Isozaki, or Chapel on the Water and Church of the Light, created by tadao Ando, which finally receive The Carlsberg Architectural Prize 1992 from Denmark Government, directly gived by Queen Margarethe II at Kopenhagen at May 29, 1992. And so do masterpiece creation by foreign architects like Il Palazzo by Aldo Rossi, and Eishin Gakuen Higashino High School by Christoper Alexander, gave contribution related to Post Post-modern architecture in Japan. Ideas and tradition became monolithic, arranged at monumentalize urban environment, building formed became attractive and dramatic.

Those matters bring to effort to create “space” of human placed and buildings strive for its identity. Then various problems came up, such as energy, ecology, and technology which came to attract common citizen. Finally, as a result from bubble economy, land price turn high, and worker expansion wider, and at her architecture change, signed as Japan post-modern architecture tragedy at beginning years 80′.

That phenomenon gave deep eyesight; there is tendencies which become characteristic of Japan to always move and to answer as need request.

Seems that here, entrepreneurs respect architect as parts of their business strategies, awakens leaning to see buildings as investment objects. Businessman came with various rationalizations, like complement of private sectors activities, develop domestic earnings to eliminate economical disagreement with other countries, or promote globalization in company activities. Excess in financial liquidation from companies also factor that generate that leaning and those factors make Post Post-Modern Architecture Phenomenon arrives.

Learn from Architecture History and Philosophy

This is not a fault if we come back to past architecture, and study philosophy that become architectural background. And so do with inter-culture which have important purpose and parts of architecture history and philosophy. Like said by Kisho Kurokawa in Rediscovering Japanese Space, that there are two thinking ways concern to history and tradition. First is history that we can see like architecture form, decoration element, and symbols (architectural heritage). Second is history that can not see, like attitude, ideas, philosophy, religion, beautifulness, and life pattern. At here there is interesting idea from Yoshinobu Ashihara in the essay Wood Cities for 21st Century. Yoshinobu Ashihara wanted a city which transformed in wood block like cottages in Switzerland or Tyrol in Austria. Also, plastic boards change in to wood board like in Edo periode (1596-1868).

That concerning (classic) continuous in Design Expo 89 at Nagoya, with Discoveries from History theme, seen clearly of building comparison between western taste presented by Leonardo Da Vinci masterpiece and east masterpiece presented by Senno-Rikyu (1521-1591). Pronounce comparison tradition and history between East and West, with purpose to achieve new inter-culture.

That ide continuos with Discovering Why-The Origin and The Future of Japan theme in The Seville Universal Expostion (Expo ‘92) at Spain. Japan participates to celebrate 500 year of Columbus shipping. A building, wooden ordered, seems like history and culture of Edo period. Under Tadao Ando command, succeed to created which have culture architectural characteristic. A element which have culture identity imaging as sign that transmitted a modern nation. This identity is kinari characteristic, its mean natural hold out.

There is interesting philosophy from Ehei Dogen (1200-1253), a Buddhist Monk from 13th century which bring new sect in Zen Buddhism, said “Let it tune and style growth like the possibility; the important is to write it in truth detail that you want to say”. This can be told as symbiosis between philosophy and architecture which expressed hundred years ago and bring one civilization.
